Ariadna Quattoni, a researcher from the Department of Computer Science at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC), is among the ten researchers in Catalonia who have recently been awarded a Starting Grant by the ERC within the framework of the EU programme for research and innovation Horizon 2020 (H2020). Selected in the field of Physical and Engineering Sciences, Ariadna Quattoni’s project Interactive machine learning for compositional models of natural language (INTERACT) will receive 1.5 million euros in European funding over five years to study how to train artificial intelligence systems without introducing a large amount of data produced by people, as required by current techniques, based on natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML).
The main objective of the project is to develop new machine learning algorithms for natural language processing that are capable of solving specific questions with minimal human intervention. The expected result is the interactive learning of AI-based systems, a technology that would help broaden the use and scope of AI systems to new sectors and organisations with specific needs and fewer resources to record the large amount of data that is currently required.
